Latest census numbers show which NC counties grew and which shrank since the pandemic

North Carolina’s two largest counties, Wake and Mecklenburg, continue to lead the state's population growth, according to the latest estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Together, these counties have added over 109,000 residents since 2020, accounting for more than a quarter of North Carolina’s 3.8% population increase over the past three years.

Wake County, home to Raleigh, grew by 5.4%, reaching nearly 1.2 million residents, while Mecklenburg County, anchored by Charlotte, continues to be a significant hub for job seekers and newcomers.

At the same time, Durham County saw a 3.7% rise, and Chatham County, bolstered by developments like Chatham Park, expanded by 7%.

Areas around Raleigh and Charlotte, including Johnston and Lincoln counties, are also expanding quickly, driven by suburban spillover.

While these areas flourish, 18 counties, mostly in eastern North Carolina, have lost population, reflecting long-term declines in agricultural and manufacturing industries.

North Carolina's metro areas are among the fastest-growing in the nation. The Raleigh-Durham-Cary area grew by 5.65%, ranking 10th nationally, while the Charlotte-Concord area saw a 4.79% increase, making it the 16th fastest-growing metro.

What impact do you think this rapid growth will have on the state’s infrastructure and housing market?
