Joe Wolf, a former North Carolina basketball standout and NBA player, passed away unexpectedly at 59, as announced by the Milwaukee Bucks.

Wolf, a key assistant coach for the Wisconsin Herd, had a celebrated basketball career, both as a player and a coach.

At North Carolina, Wolf was a captain under legendary coach Dean Smith, playing alongside stars like Michael Jordan and Sam Perkins.

As a 6-foot-11 center and forward, Wolf helped the Tar Heels reach the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight twice, contributing to a stellar 115-22 record during his four seasons. He was also an All-ACC selection in 1987.

Drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers in 1987, Wolf played 11 seasons in the NBA, making stops in Denver, Charlotte, Orlando, Portland, Boston, and Milwaukee, where he returned to his home state of Wisconsin. Known as one of the greatest high school players in Wisconsin history, he led Kohler High School to three state championships.

After his playing career, Wolf transitioned into coaching, serving as an assistant at William & Mary and UNC Wilmington, and head coaching in the G League. His passing marks a significant loss to the basketball community.

Wolf's legacy in basketball will be remembered both for his skills on the court and the mentorship he provided as a coach.
