North Carolina is expanding its efforts to promote healthy eating habits in schools through the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP).

According to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI), 212 schools across the state are now participating in this initiative.

The FFVP provides free fresh fruits and vegetables to children at eligible elementary schools during the school day, aiming to expose students to new varieties and encourage them to make healthier food choices.

For the past 20 years, North Carolina has been a key participant in this federally assisted program, funded by a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant.

State Superintendent Catherine Truitt highlights the significance of this program, stating that it nourishes both students’ bodies and minds, helping establish lifelong healthy eating habits.

Dr. Lynn Harvey, Senior Director for the Office of School Nutrition, also noted that the program is particularly important for introducing students to fruits and vegetables they might not otherwise choose.

The initiative aims not only to increase the consumption of fresh produce but also to provide valuable nutrition education, fostering a healthier future for North Carolina's youth.

"Fruits they may not choose" Food education should start at home, but unfortunately, some parents have other goals. Beer, cigarettes, or healthy nutrition, guess which is chosen first.
