The viral movie Cocaine Bear has sparked conversations not just in North Carolina but all over the USA about the dangers drugs pose to animals.

While the movie focuses on a wild bear overdosing on cocaine, the risks extend to our pets, even from common household items.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN ANIMALS INGEST DRUGS?

Like the bear, animals can feel the effects of drugs and sometimes get sick or die from them, experts say.

The impacts of drugs can vary based on exactly what the drug is.

Drugs like Adderall, ibuprofen, or even cannabis can be harmful to pets, causing symptoms such as tremors, seizures, and organ failure according to the ASPCA.

In addition pets exposed to these substances can suffer severe health consequences, and in some cases, they can even become addicted, according to research.

If you believe your pet has ingested a harmful substance, contact your veterinarian immediately or call the ASPCA’s poison control hotline at 888-426-4435. Taking swift action can prevent serious damage and save your pet’s life.

Living in North Carolina, it’s crucial to be aware of these risks and take preventive measures. Keep all medications and harmful substances stored safely out of your pet’s reach. As a pet-loving community, we must prioritize their safety and well-being.

Have you ever encountered a situation where your pet accidentally ingested something dangerous? How did you handle it? Share your experience and advice with other pet owners!
