As the weather cools down, you may start noticing some tiny house guests — mice.

According to Michael Cove, research curator of mammalogy at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences, house mice are not just a winter problem. They seek food and shelter in homes year-round, but you’re more likely to spot them in fall and winter when resources outdoors become scarce.

House mice (originally from Europe) have adapted to live alongside humans, making themselves at home wherever they can find food. While they may seem harmless, these rodents are invasive pests that can carry diseases, damage property, and contaminate food supplies.

Wondering if you have mice? Look for signs like droppings, chewed food packages, and squeaking or scurrying sounds in walls. To keep them out, seal any small cracks or holes in your home, store food in airtight containers, and set traps where needed. Experts recommend snap traps over live traps for humane removal.

Natural deterrents like peppermint or cinnamon oil can also help, but avoid using poison — it can be harmful to other wildlife and leave you with hidden dead mice in your walls.

In short, house mice are common, but with a few precautions, you can keep them out this fall.
