Life expectancy in the United States has been steadily increasing, with the average lifespan rising by nearly seven years over the past half-century.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the average lifespan was 70.8 years in 1970 and increased to 77.5 years by 2022.

While factors such as genetics, lifestyle choices, and diet play significant roles, the place where you live can also impact your overall lifespan.

Certain areas of the world, known as "blue zones," are famous for having a high number of residents who live to 100 years or more. These regions include Ikaria, Greece; Loma Linda, California; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Okinawa, Japan; and Sardinia, Italy. Researchers study these areas to understand how environment and lifestyle contribute to longevity.

In the United States, some counties exhibit higher life expectancy rates compared to others. Using data from the 2024 County Health Rankings & Roadmaps by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, Stacker identified the counties in North Carolina with the highest life expectancy.
