NYC Mayor Under Fire for Luxury Apartments for Immigrants

    2024-02-19

During a community forum in Harlem, New York City Mayor Eric Adams faced criticism and questions about a proposal to provide housing to illegal immigrants.

The plan suggests that unused luxury apartments at 2201 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd. be used to house immigrants, which includes apartments with a swimming pool and marble bathrooms. This proposal did not sit well with some of the attendees.

During a community meeting, tensions rose, and two people had to be escorted out. Some community members brought signs with slogans like "Millions on migrants. What about youth programs?"

There were differing opinions on the proposed homeless shelter. Tyrone Ball opposed the idea and said, "We already have a homeless shelter. You go outside this building, there is a huge shelter and another shelter up the block beyond that. We don't need another one."

Residents demanded affordable housing for themselves instead of using the building for migrant housing. Attendees were concerned about the lack of transparency and notification regarding the plan, which angered residents.

After the meeting, New York City Mayor Eric Adams made a U-turn on plans to convert an abandoned luxury apartment complex into a shelter for illegal migrants.
