Tennessee Governor Sends More Soldiers to Texas as Political Fight Over Border Increases

    2024-03-05

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee is sending more National Guard troops to the border this spring to support Texas in its ongoing dispute with federal authorities over immigration enforcement.

During last month's meeting, Governor Greg Abbott requested the assistance of Republican Governors in securing the country's border, acknowledging the immense challenge at hand. Governor Bill Lee supported Texas Governor Greg Abbott in addressing the ongoing border crisis.

Tennessee National Guard Maj. Gen. Warner Ross did not disclose where Tennessee's contingent will be sent. However, Tennessee deployed 125 soldiers to McAllen, Texas, last year. The new deployment includes about 50 soldiers and will be deployed through March, with another wave replacing them later in the spring.

    Background information:

Earlier this year, the Texas National Guard took control of a popular border crossing in Eagle Pass, and Texas began blocking federal immigration officials and Border Patrol agents from the area. The U.S. Supreme Court later ruled that the state could not block federal access, upholding the longstanding precedent that the federal government, not states, controls border enforcement.

Do you think immigration is the number one issue in the 2024 election?
