Driver in deadly July 4th NYC crash arraigned on host of charges
NEW YORK - The man accused of killing three people when he allegedly drove drunk into a crowd on the Lower East Side on July 4th was arraigned on a host of charges Saturday. Daniel Hyden of Monmouth Junction, New Jersey is charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, aggravated vehicular assault, manslaughter, assault and operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Hyden was also driving with a suspended license, prosecutors said.Hyden, 44, appeared before a judge Saturday morning. 83-year-old man shoved down NYC subway stairs
NEW YORK - An 83-year-old man is recovering after police say he was shoved down the stairs of a subway station in an unprovoked attack. The victim was exiting the 53rd Street and Lexington Avenue station when he was pushed at around 11:10 p.m. Friday night. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital with a head laceration and is in stable condition. Police have arrested a suspect. Kingsley Adjo, 54, was charged with assault and reckless endangerment. Earlier this year, a rise in subway crime prompted Gov. Kathy Hochul to deploy the National Guard troops to the subway system, and Mayor Eric Adams to reinstitute bag checks in the system. Just this week, the NYPD released their latest monthly crime statistics. According to the NYPD, major crime in the subway system was down 6.9% year to date, and by 15.3% compared to June of 2023. The police department said crime levels in transit have hit a 14-year low, "discounting pandemic-era irregularities." "As we look back on the first half of this year, we can see the steady progress in the NYPD's relentless fight against violence and disorder – an unwavering commitment that will continue through the summer months," NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban said.

Walgreens Closing Select New York Stores
The big-name pharmacy has released a list of stores that are expected to close as the company finalizes a plan to fix its struggling business. Earlier this month we told you that Walgreens CEO Tim Wentworth announced that the company would be closing hundreds of its more than 8,600 drugstores over the next three years. Wentworth explained that "changes are imminent" for about 25% of the company’s underperforming stores, which could affect roughly 2,100 stores across the country.

Hot and humid conditions are forecast, with heat index values potentially reaching between 98°F and 100°F (36.6°-37.7°C) in parts of the city. There is also a chance of showers and thunderstorms.
College-Bound NYC Students Earn $10,000 Milken Scholars Award
Four New York City students have been selected to join the prestigious 2024 class of Milken Scholars. The scholarship Program honors high school seniors in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles County each year with a $10,000 cash prize and lifelong access to college advising, career counseling, internship assistance, community service opportunities, and a fund to help with graduate school applications, unpaid internships, study abroad programs, and other costs associated with their pursuit of a career.
Second Phase of Redevelopment at Kingsland Commons Set to Begin this Summer
Construction on the second phase development of Kingsland Commons, the former Greenpoint Hospital Campus, is set to begin this summer. The redevelopment will include an 18-story building with 311 permanently affordable homes serving low income residents including formerly homeless individuals and families.
