Youngkin Declares State of Emergency Ahead of Tropical Storm Debby

    2024-08-07

RICHMOND, Va — Based on National Weather Service (NWS) and National Hurricane Center (NHC) forecasts Governor Glenn Youngkin has declared a state of emergency for the Commonwealth.

The announcement was made via a media statement from the office of the governor. Weather forecasts indicate that Tropical Storm Debby might arrive in the state with significant rainfall and flooding on the evening of Wednesday, August 7, 2024. Conditions may cause transportation challenges and power outages.

“As we prepare for Tropical Storm Debby, I urge all Virginians and visitors to stay informed, follow local emergency guidelines, and take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of their families and communities. There is the potential for strong winds, heavy rains, and possible flooding across regions of the Commonwealth,” said Governor Youngkin.

A state of emergency allows the state to mobilize resources and equipment for response and recovery if needed.

“It's crucial that we work together and remain vigilant during these times to minimize the impact of the storm,” said Youngkin.
