Governor Glenn Youngkin Orders All US Flags To Be Flown At Half Staff August 17

    2024-08-13

RICHMOND, Va — Governor Glenn Youngkin announced an order for all United States and Virginia State Flags to be flown at half-staff on August 17, 2024 in honor of a deputy who lost his life in the line of duty.

Smyth County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Hunter Reedy, a 27-year-old father of three, passed away Friday August 9 after being shot during a traffic stop.

On August 11, Governor Glenn Youngkin issued this statement:

“We ask for everyone to lift-up in prayer and support the family, friends, and colleagues of Deputy Hunter Reedy, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty. It’s a stark reminder that our law enforcement heroes risk their lives every day and his bravery and commitment to protecting and serving the Smyth County community will never be forgotten. Suzanne and I are so grateful for the support being poured out for Deputy Reedy’s family.”

Smyth County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Michael Fedorchuk was also injured during the same traffic stop:

“We continue to pray for the swift and full recovery of Deputy Fedorchuk, who was also struck by gunfire in the same incident,”said Youngkin in the written statement. “During this difficult time, we stand united in support of our entire law enforcement community and their families.”

To honor Deputy Hunter Reedy’s duty and sacrifice, the Governor has ordered all US and Virginia State flags to be flown at half-staff on Saturday, August 17 – the day of Reedy’s memorial services.
