GORE, Va. – Virginia State Police (VSP) are investigating a crash that claimed the life of an elderly woman and seriously-injured two passengers on Monday.

According to an emailed media release from VSP Sergeant Brent W. Coffey, the incident occurred August 26, 2024.

At 5:49 p.m. a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu was traveling north on N. Frederick Pike (Route 522) when it ran off the right side of the road, overcorrected, ran off the right side of the roadway again, and collided with an embankment before overturning just south of Ebenezer Church Road in Frederick County.

The driver, Gretchen L. Largent, 85, of Berkley Springs, WV, was not wearing a seatbelt and was partially ejected during the crash. She died at the scene.

A 93-year-old male passenger and a 76-year-old female passenger both suffered serious injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Neither had been wearing a seatbelt.

According to VSP, the crash remains under investigation.
