STAFFORD, Va. – An elderly Stafford man is lucky to be alive after driving under the influence and flipping his car.

According to a media release from the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), the incident occurred October 11, 2024.

At 9:28 p.m. SCSO deputies responded to the 1900 block of Mountain View Road for reports of an auto accident. Callers advised that an SUV had flipped over and was currently upside-down – with the driver still belted inside.

Using a special tool, a deputy broke one of the rear windows and entered the vehicle. Due to the possibility of a serious spinal injury, Fire and Rescue staff were quickly dispatched to the scene to safely remove the driver from the vehicle.

After being extracted, the 82-year-old driver exhibited signs of intoxication. He admitted to consuming "two beers" prior to getting behind the wheel. The vehicle itself contained numerous open beer containers.

The man was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Due to the extent of his injuries, the driver was held at the hospital. He was also issued a summons for driving under the influence.
