June, 2003 meeting minute summaries from the Page County Board of Supervisors, the town of Luray, the town of Shenandoah, and the Page County School Board. Supervisors conducted a public hearing that considered a special use permit request by a citizen to operate a dog breeding business on Lake Arrowhead Road in Luray. The hearing drew no speakers. Supervisors unanimously approved the permit request, with special use conditions as recommended by the Page County Planning Commission.

Police seek ‘lit’ shopper in department store blaze
HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Harrisonburg Fire Department is seeking the public’s help in identifying a person of interest after a recent Gabe’s Department Store fire. The fire occurred late in the afternoon of June 29 at the Gabe’s store on East Market Street, in Harrisonburg.

Owner of new Luray gym focused on lifting the community
LURAY, Va. – A new fitness center opened its doors on June 12, bringing a greatly-missed resource back to Page County. On October 13, 2022, a fire at the East Luray Shopping Center Dollar Tree also caused damage to an adjacent gym, owned by Winchester-based Valley Health. The health system quickly announced it would temporarily close the gym to assess the damage, and determine a reopening date.
Luray man arrested on multiple counts after high-speed chase
CULPEPER COUNTY, Va. – A Luray man is in custody after leading police on a high-speed chase and extensive foot pursuit. According to a press release from the Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), deputies responded to the 12000 block of Mitchell Road and Rapidan Road, shortly before 9:00 a.m. on June 17, for a report of a domestic disturbance.

Busy week for PCSO; four subjects in custody
LURAY, Va. – The Page County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) has announced the arrests of four individuals who were under investigation. One subject remains at large. On Tuesday, June 13, a search warrant was executed at 852 Judy Lane Ext. in Stanley, as part of an investigation by the PCSO Criminal Investigations Division.
Shenandoah National Park seeks input on new backcountry camping system
LURAY, Va. – Shenandoah National Park (SNP) officials are requesting public input on a proposed backcountry camping permit system. Consisting of 80,000 acres, the park encompasses parts of eight Virginia counties. Each year, millions visit the park, which includes the 105-mile Skyline Drive, 75 designated scenic overlooks, visitor centers, lodging and restaurants. Just two hours west of Washington D.C., the park also offers plenty of ways to enjoy an overnight stay in the great outdoors.
Highway improvements slated for dangerous Luray intersection
LURAY, Va. – A busy Page County intersection, seen by many as dangerous, is slated to undergo several safety upgrades. The intersection, located near the Food Lion Shopping Center west of Luray, has been the site of numerous vehicle crashes in recent years.
