New York Stewart International Airport receives $24.2M federal grant

The U.S. Department of Transportation recently awarded the New York Stewart International Airport a $24.2 million Airport Improvement Program grant.

The grant is reimbursement for a 2017 project that installed environmentally friendly LED lights into the runway pavement, and rehabilitated 11,817 feet of pavement and 6,004 feet of runway.

“We are grateful for this federal grant that acknowledges the hard work and investment from the port authority to maintain and enhance operations at New York Stewart,” Rick Cotton Port Authority of New York and New Jersey executive director, said. “The port authority looks forward to continuing to work with our federal partners to fully realize the potential of New York Stewart as we make strategic investments that attract additional carriers and offer new destinations to travelers across the region.”

New York Stewart is an economical alternative to the region’s larger airports. It offers year-round flights via Allegiant Air, Breeze Airways, and PLAY Airlines, and seasonal service via Atlantic Airways.

The Port Authority’s Board of Commissioners voted earlier this summer to award two new leases to support general aviation services at New York Stewart. The new leases align with the agency’s longstanding commitment to grow general aviation services, and unlocks the full economic potential of the historically underutilized airport.
