The Port of Oakland is seeking a developer for a 50-acre site along the Oakland waterfront.

The Howard Property is a former marine terminal that ceased operations in 2013 and is adjacent to industrial operations to the west and Jack London Square, an East Bay top waterfront entertainment destination, to the east.

The port will consider a wide range of submissions including commercial, light industrial, maritime, recreational, and/or water-oriented uses.

The property currently is used mostly for short-term property rental agreements to accommodate container parking, depot operations, and other ancillary maritime services.

“The Port has a major opportunity to create a transformational development project that can provide critical economic benefits to Oakland and the region,” Jonathan Veach, Port of Oakland chief real estate officer, said. “We’re looking for development partners who will help realize the Port’s commitment to creating good-paying, local jobs for the region while fully activating the Howard Property.”

Applications are due by Dec. 9.

Port officials have considered different ideas for the site over the years. An exclusive negotiation term sheet with the Oakland A’s for a potential mixed-use ballpark development, signed in 2019, expired in May 2023.

The Port of Oakland oversees nearly 20 miles of waterfront.
