FAA exceeds 2024 hiring goals for air traffic controllers

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has hired 1,811 air traffic controllers during fiscal year 2024, exceeding its goal by 11.

This also marks the largest number hires in nearly a decade.

“Our dedicated air traffic controllers keep the flying public safe every day,” FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker said. “I’m thrilled to announce that we hit this major hiring milestone and have so many talented professionals entering our training program. It’s a testament to the hard work of everyone involved and part of our ongoing work to rebuild the controller workforce.”

The FAA met its hiring goal by recruiting controllers with prior air traffic experience from the military and private industry.

With this year’s addition, the agency has more than 14,000 air traffic controllers. Approximately 3,400 controllers are in various stages of training.

Beginning Oct. 11, the FAA will open a new application period to allow applicants more time to submit applications.

Selected applicants must successfully complete training at the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City. Trainees are then placed in a radar facility or air traffic tower with staffing needs determining location.

Applicants must U.S. citizens under the age of 31 who can speak English clearly and are willing to work anywhere in the United States.
