    1. The Great Atlantic Hurricane (1944):
In September 1944, the Great Atlantic Hurricane made landfall near Atlantic City, unleashing its fury on the New Jersey coastline. The storm brought with it powerful winds, torrential rains, and destructive storm surges, causing widespread flooding and damage. The Great Atlantic Hurricane claimed the lives of over 390 people in New Jersey and left a lasting impact on coastal communities.

    2. Hurricane Sandy (2012):
Superstorm Sandy, one of the most devastating hurricanes in New Jersey's recent history, struck the state on October 29, 2012, leaving a path of destruction in its wake. Sandy's powerful winds and storm surges inundated coastal areas, causing extensive flooding, property damage, and power outages. The storm claimed the lives of 37 people in New Jersey and caused billions of dollars in damage, making it one of the deadliest and costliest hurricanes to ever hit the state.

    3. Hurricane Irene (2011):
In August 2011, Hurricane Irene battered the East Coast, including New Jersey, with heavy rains and high winds. The storm caused widespread flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and along riverbanks. Irene's impact was felt across the state, resulting in evacuations, road closures, and significant property damage. While the storm claimed the lives of several individuals in other states, no fatalities were reported in New Jersey.

    4. Hurricane Donna (1960):
Hurricane Donna, a powerful Category 2 storm, made landfall in New Jersey in September 1960, bringing destructive winds and heavy rains to the region. The storm caused widespread flooding, knocked down trees and power lines, and damaged homes and infrastructure. Despite its intensity, Hurricane Donna resulted in relatively few fatalities in New Jersey compared to other hurricanes.

    5. The Great Atlantic Hurricane (1821):
The Great Atlantic Hurricane of 1821, one of the earliest recorded hurricanes to impact New Jersey, wreaked havoc along the coastline, causing extensive damage and loss of life. The storm's powerful winds and storm surges flooded coastal areas and destroyed homes, ships, and infrastructure. While records from this time are limited, historical accounts indicate that the Great Atlantic Hurricane of 1821 left a lasting impression on the state.

As New Jerseyans, we are no strangers to the power and fury of hurricanes and tropical storms. These formidable forces of nature have shaped our coastline, our communities, and our collective memory, reminding us of the importance of preparedness, resilience, and unity in the face of adversity. While we cannot control the weather, we can take steps to protect ourselves and our loved ones, ensuring that we are ready to weather the storm whenever it may come.
