Back in the 19th and early 20th centuries, New Jersey was once a bustling center for mills and mining towns. As technology and industry shifted, the need for these fields decreased dramatically and in turn, many towns and communities became abandoned. In the 21st century, many of these places still sit vacant today. Frozen in time, these communities are actually some of the most fascinating places to explore here in the Garden State. Keep reading to learn more about one of the most infamous ghost towns in western New Jersey.

Located at the heart of Walpack Township in Sussex County is Walpack Center. Formed in the mid-1800s, this town was once a thriving farming community. At its peak, the town was home to thousands of residents. Today, it is nearly completely abandoned as only 20 people call this small community home.

In the 1960s, the state of New Jersey filed an order to evacuate forcing many families to leave. Plans for a dam were underway, and the land needed to be used to fill it. Unfortunately, the dam was never fully built. Today, the town sits mostly unoccupied, and various rumors of ghosts and paranormal activity surround it.

If you were to visit Walpack Center today, you'd be met with some of the most stunning architecture from the 19th century. This area is filled with old schoolhouses, historic farmhouses, a Methodist church, and even a museum where you can learn more about the town's history and demise.

Located a little further down the road from Walpack Center you'll find the amazing Walpack Inn. A historic restaurant with unparalleled views of the Delaware River Valley from its covered patio, this is one dining destination you don't want to miss out on.
