Built in 1905 by a textile baron named Frederic Kip, it originally served as a private residence. After his wife passed in 1926, the home was sold to Signono Munoz who earned his fortune from the oil industry. The home remained a private residence until the 1980s.

Kip's Castle is a stunning example of Tudor-style architecture. Designed by renowned architect Ernest George, the mansion features intricately carved woodwork, stained glass windows, and decorative stonework, reflecting the wealth and sophistication of its former inhabitants.

Once it was sold, things got a bit weird. In 1980, the home was sold to Indian guru, Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. The castle was then converted to a compound, home to a cult promoting sexual liberation. Their ads were seen in local papers promoting sex as a form of therapy. The cult was based out of the castle for nearly 5 years.

The cult eventually moved to Oregon but left the castle to fall into a state of decay. The cult's leader and several members were convicted of crimes ranging from tax evasion to attempted murder. The property was finally bought in 1985 by a law firm. It took over 20 years to restore the castle but eventually, it was sold to the Essex County Parks System in 2007.
