Hot dogs are a simple pleasure–ketchup, mustard, maybe some relish, and voila, you’ve got the classic all-American dog.

However, there’s one restaurant in North Carolina that truly puts some extra love into the craft of hot dog assembly. A true dining fixture that's about as old-school as it gets: Shorty's Famous Hot Dogs in Wake Forest.

Shorty's opened in 1916 and has become one of North Carolina's most beloved eateries.

The restaurant is known for its retro vibe that will seriously take you back in time. It features an old-fashioned service counter and dining room complete with red leather stools, classic arcade games, and walls covered in old photographs and their original menu from the 1920s.

The menu here hasn't changed in decades either, and it is often regarded as one of the most affordable places to eat in the Raleigh area.

Chose between an impressively wide array of options that include favorites like the cheese dog, burgers, grilled cheese sandwiches, pecan pie, and chili cheese crinkle cut fries.

The most iconic option here is the Jesse Jones dog–an all-beef hot dog served "all the way" with mustard, chili, and onions.
