Hot dogs are a simple pleasure. Ketchup, mustard, maybe some relish, and voila, you’ve got the classic all-American dog.

However, there’s one place in Florida that truly puts some extra love into the craft of hot dog assembly. A true dining fixture that's about as old-school as it gets: the infamous Mel's Hot Dogs in Tampa.

Mel's opened in 1973 and has become one of Florida's most beloved eateries.

The restaurant is known for its retro vibe that will seriously take you back in time. It features vintage signage and an old-fashioned dining room complete with red leather booths, metal stools and tables, and walls covered in old photographs.

The menu here hasn't changed in decades either. Chose between an impressively long list of 17 different hot dog options that include favorites like the cheese dog, chili dog, Reuben Dog, and the most popular: the Chicago style hot dog–their famous all beef dog served on a steamed poppy seed bun topped with mustard, onions, relish, pickles, tomatoes, celery salt, and hot peppers. It doesn't get much more iconic than this.

Of course, Mel's also specializes in classic diner foods as well like burgers, sandwiches, and delicious sides like fries covered in cheese and chili, onion rings, and homemade coleslaw.

The next time you find yourself craving a good old-fashioned hot dog served with a side of nostalgia, be sure to hit up this Florida dining fixture. Mel's is currently open every day of the week except Sundays from 11 am until 8 pm.
