This Speakeasy is Hidden inside a Suburban Home In New Jersey

For those of us who like a good drink once in a while on a night out, we’re all glad prohibition is just something we studied in history class! But this 20th-century period left some fascinating remnants in our culture – including the tradition of speakeasies, which were underground bars where the booze continued to flow far away from the prying eyes of the law.

One of the most unique speakeasies in the state can be found in the town of Rumson hidden inside a seemingly ordinary suburban home on the corner of Ward Lane and Center Street called Murphy’s Tavern.

Keep your eyes peeled for the small 1920s-themed sign that says "Murphy's Since Prohibition" and you'll know you've stumbled upon the right spot.

Murphy's is an authentic speakeasy that has been secretly serving up liquor since Prohibition times. It's seen several different owners over its lifespan of 100 years but it is in fact, still in its original location.

One of its most famous and celebrated owners was named Mary Murphy and her spirit lives on with several different drinks named after her.

The speakeasy includes a dartboard, jukebox, and shuffleboard. In addition to cocktails, wine, and beer, the tavern also sells an array of delicious thin-crust pizzas and disco fries.
