Some of New Jersey’s Boardwalks are getting a Makeover

    2024-06-05

The Jersey Shore, renowned for its iconic boardwalks, is set to receive a significant makeover thanks to a substantial influx of federal funds.

18 coastal towns are gearing up for major renovations, aiming to revitalize these beloved public spaces while preserving their historical charm. This initiative promises to enhance the appeal of the Jersey Shore for both residents and visitors, ensuring these iconic features remain a cornerstone of New Jersey’s coastal identity.

Gov. Phil Murphy and various lawmakers are using New Jersey’s share of aid from the American Rescue Plan Act which is $2 trillion COVID-19 recovery and stimulus initiative signed into law by President Joe Biden in 2021, to fund the boardwalk preservation program.

More than 30 NJ communities applied for funding and in order to qualify, applicants needed to meet at least one of the following criteria: Boardwalk construction that adds new boardwalk components; boardwalk maintenance; boardwalk reconstruction, or repair of ancillary or appurtenant structures. Improving accessibility, storm resiliency and durability were other key criteria, officials said.

Below is a list of cities and towns with boardwalk enhancements underway:

Asbury Park, Atlantic City, Belmar, Berkley, Bradley Beach, Brigantine, Cape May, Carteret, Keyport, Long Branch, North Wildwood, Ocean City, Sea Isle City, Seaside Heights, Toms River, Ventor, Wildwood, Wildwood Crest.

The boardwalk makeovers are expected to have a substantial positive impact on the local economies of the Jersey Shore towns. By revitalizing these areas, the towns hope to attract more tourists, which in turn will boost local businesses and create new job opportunities. The enhancements are also anticipated to increase property values and improve the quality of life for residents.
