Comments at security screening lead to lockdown at Cherry Capital Airport

TRAVERSE CITY — A passenger was denied boarding at Cherry Capital Airport on Tuesday after airport personnel said the passenger made inappropriate comments while going through security screening.

The comments had to do with the explosion detection machine, they said. A nearby individual heard the comments, believed something was wrong and reported them. Airport staff acted quickly, bringing in local law enforcement, Homeland Security and TSA.

“I know it does [cause] some inconvenience and maybe some missed connections down the line, but we appreciate everyone’s patience during this situation, because our number one job is the safety and security of our travelers,” said airport CEO Kevin Klein. “If you see something, say something,”

After about an hour, security determined the airport was safe, and travel resumed normally. They said no criminal charges are being pursued at this time.
