GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The human bones found at a Traverse City construction site are likely from a pre-modern era, police say.

On Friday, a construction crew working to rebuild a section of the Grandview Parkway near Oak Street unearthed potential human bones , according to the Traverse City Police Department. The site was secured as police investigated.

In a Tuesday update, police said the human bones appear to be pre-modern. They “could be from a time period well before contemporary forensic methods were available,” Traverse City police said in a release .

Archaeologists from the Michigan Department of Transportation and forensic anthropologists from Western Michigan University, along with Michigan State Police, are helping the Traverse City Police Department with the investigation.

After a pause in construction, work is set to continue along Grandview Parkway.
