Umbrella weather: Chance of showers to start workweek in Metro Detroit
After a hotter-than-normal June with a heat wave in Southeast Michigan, temperatures have largely been near normal to slightly below normal this month. Metro Detroit’s seasonable weather will continue through the week. Sunday night into Monday will bring mostly cloudy conditions. Early morning lows will be near 65 degrees in Detroit, Downriver and Monroe, lower 60s for most other communities in Metro Detroit, and mid to upper 50s in the Thumb.
Concrete demolition in progress at Soo Locks, noise expected 6 days a week
SAULT STE. MARIE — Construction rages on in Sault Ste. Marie, with progress continuing on the New Lock at the Soo project. According to a Facebook post from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Sabin Lock is being demolished to allow for the construction of the new lock.
Into the Vines with Aurora Cellars
Ever wonder how the wine gets made? Curious minds can join Drew Perry, Aurora Cellars’ head winemaker, in the vineyard on Sunday, July 28, at 11am. Attendees will take a tour of the vineyard to see young and old vines, grape crops ripening for the harvest, and sustainable farming practices at work. (Be sure to wear proper clothes and shoes for the outing!) You’ll also enjoy a picnic lunch and several of the award-winning wines Aurora has produced over the years. Perry—who has been with Aurora since 2014 after stints in Napa and at Traverse City’s Left Foot Charley—will answer questions and share stories about the winemaking process. Paralympic equestrian team for USA has Michigan tie
As the world prepares for the Summer 2024 Olympic Games, preparations are also underway for the Paralympics occurring shortly after that. Paralympics are a set of competitions that mirror the Olympic Games, but are intended for athletes with physical disabilities. Three of the 2024 para-equestrian team members from the USA are the same athletes who took bronze in the team category at the 2020 Paralympics.
State Police Bust "Ring of Thieves"
Michigan State Police troopers busted what the department described as a "ring of thieves" and recovered multiple stolen items from locations across Grand Traverse County. Troopers received a complaint Thursday of a motorcycle stolen from a Blair Township home. "Through aggressive investigative efforts, community social media posts, and a string of anonymous tips," troopers were able to identify two suspects in just a few hours, according to MSP. The suspects included a 40-year-old Green Lake Township man and another 38-year-old man. The 40-year-old was interviewed at his home, but the stolen motorcycle wasn't found.
