    In Treasure Island, baby sea turtles, bewildered and scattered, run wild

    Just after sunrise on Monday, the Treasure Island Police Department’s non-emergency number was flooded with calls.

    Beachgoers on morning strolls reported a horde of baby sea turtles moving away from open waters and toward the barrier island’s developed coastline. Bright lights competed with a waxing crescent moon and led about 60 hatchlings astray.

    Officer Mark Douglas soon set to work with a yellow plastic tray resembling a beach toy used for sifting sand and scooped up the hapless newborns.

    He found hatchlings more than 200 yards from their nest crossing busy Bay Boulevard.

    Part-relay race and part-scavenger hunt, Douglas collected the turtles, deposited them...
