Rocky Point is a Dead Town Since the Arizona Border Crossing Was Closed

    2023-12-13

The most famous way to get to "Arizona's Beach" in Puerto Peñasco, also known as Rocky Point, is now closed, and there is no plan for when it will open again.

"Everything was shut down. As one Rocky Point company owner put it, "I mean, it was like a little ghost town." "Everything has gone down: local businesses, restaurants, hotels, rentals, and so on."

Since December 4, the Lukeville Port of Entry on the border between Arizona and Mexico has been closed. Now, tourists must either take a different path through San Luis or Nogales or cancel their plans. A lot of people are picking the second choice.

An agent in Rocky Point named Scott Poturalski said, "We have zero to very little business going on right now because people aren't willing to drive the extra two and a half hours."

In December, the holiday spot usually doesn't have much going on, but Poturalski said that the beaches and restaurants are so empty that it makes him think of the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown.

"I had a Christmas party for our employees Friday night in one of the nicer restaurants in Rocky Point, and on a Friday night, we were the only group in there the entire night," said Poturalski. Agents from the Lukeville Port of Entry were sent to other parts of the border to help with arrests.

Poturalski said, "We don't know when this is going to stop. Some people think it's going through Lukeville or nowhere at all, even though there are other ways to get here." There are people from Arizona who are deciding to make the trip.

He drove from Mesa to Rocky Point on Tuesday morning, going through the San Luis Port of Entry. "A lot of that drive was on brand-new roads. "There was only one section with some potholes, but I thought it was fine, and I saw that they were being fixed this morning," Harris said.

Even though the other ways are longer, Harris said it was worth the trip. She said, "The sunset is beautiful, and the fact that there aren't many people here is also nice, but I don't get why more people aren't coming down."

Cordova is one of the business owners working together to help people on the road from the border to Rocky Point.

"We want your business very much." We really need you to come down and help our local businesses. It's only been a week and a day, but we can already feel it. "Just think if this keeps going," Cordova said. Lukeville Port of Entry has not yet been given a date for its restart.
