CA Synagogues is on High Alert After Getting Threatening Emails

    2024-01-03

Tuesday, email threats caused California synagogues to have to close because of probes by local and federal police. It was said in an email to more than 100 synagogues that explosives were on their land. At this point, the police don't think the threats are real, and no bombs have been found.

Jeff Abrams, Regional Director of the Anti-Defamation League in Los Angeles, said, "There has to be known, there is a consequence." "These aren't always terrorist groups; sometimes it's just lone wolves or people who think it's funny. But again, there are consequences, and police are arresting them."

The Anti-Defamation League says that since October 7, there has been 337% more racism than in 2022. Abrams said, "Law enforcement isn't doing their job to protect the whole community because they are too busy with these hoaxes." "This will have an effect, so everyone needs to speak out. And once more, speak out as a group."

Threats like these are very bad for temples because they have to close their centers and have their buildings swept to make sure everyone is safe. Since the war between Israel and Hamas started on October 7, synagogues have already made them safer.

Sarah Hronsky, President of the Board of Rabbis, said, "I feel disheartened. It is deeply disturbing to receive this kind of communication from anyone, and to know that it was aimed at hundreds of synagogues across the whole state of California is an incredibly unfair way to start the new year." "And it's not okay to think that this year will start the same way last year ended."

An Anti-Defamation League report says that over the weekend, a similar email threat was sent to temples all over the United States. But the email that was sent on Tuesday seems to be aimed directly at synagogues in California.

The FBI said in a statement, "The FBI and our law enforcement partners are aware of reports of a threat to synagogues in California." "The non-corroborated threat doesn't say where it happened, but precautions are being taken to see if the threat is real and to find the person who made it."
