New Jersey Joins City's Fight Against Bus Companies Who are Transporting Migrants

    2024-01-09

Gov. Phil Murphy has written to nearly two dozen bus firms in New Jersey requesting 32 hours of warning and passenger information concerning busses dropping off migrants in the Garden State for New York City.

This is how Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's bus operators carrying migrants may evade Mayor Eric Adams' executive order prohibiting bus operations and requiring advanced notification. "We spoke with the governor last week. He shares our disapproval of bus companies and Abbott "Adams remarked.

Murphy's letter cites many of the bus firms the city is suing for breaching a 19th-century law that requires "needy person" transporters to pay for their expenditures.

"In extreme circumstances like this, New York state law requires the social services commissioner to sue anyone responsible for a bad faith effort to overwhelm our system to pay charges. This is our goal "City Hall Chief Counsel Lisa Zornberg told reporters Monday during the mayor's weekly press conference. Abbott called the city's lawsuit frivolous on Fox News Sunday.

"They have the legal right to travel wherever they want in the United States and the lawsuit by the mayor violates the United States Constitution in several respects, and the mayor is going to lose and lose badly," said Abbott.

Civil rights attorney Norman Siegel believes the case will allow the city to learn about Texas' bus operations if it survives a certain request to dismiss.

This is beneficial because it will be the first time people on oath are questioned about how this happened. What did the Texas governor and administration do to encourage these bus firms to do it?" Siegel stated.

Adams told reporters he may add metal detectors and cameras at immigration centers. This follows Saturday's kitchen knife murder on Randall's Island.

"The overwhelming number of migrant asylum seekers, they come here to be a part of this great American experience, and there's a numerical small number who would do something violent like that, and we're going to carry out the full extent of law enforcement to bring them to justice," he added.
