1 Dead in Avalanche at Palisades Tahoe Resort in California State

    2024-01-11

The Palisades Tahoe lodge on the California side of Lake Tahoe was hit by an avalanche and one person died. The person who died in the avalanche has been named as Kenneth Kidd, 66, who lives in both Point Reyes and the Truckee area.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center says this is the first avalanche death in the United States this winter (2023–2024).

Sgt. David Smith, a spokesman for the Placer County Sheriff's Office, told reporters Wednesday that no one has been reported missing and that the search is over.

Michael Gross, vice president of mountain operations at Palisades Tahoe, told reporters that the guy who died was buried in the avalanche.

Authorities say that someone else hurt their leg in the landslide. Gross said that both were out-of-town guests who were at the lodge. At this time, no other information about the person who died is being shared.

Officials at the resort said that two people who got caught in the slide were only slightly hurt. The sheriff's office says the slope of the slide is 450 feet long, 150 feet wide, and 10 feet deep.

Thursday around 9:30 a.m. local time, Palisades Tahoe Resort said they heard about the landslide. The slide took place close to the brand-new KT-22 lift, which opened for business on Wednesday at 9 a.m.

The ski area said that both sides of the mountain are closed. "This is a sad day for my team and everyone here," CEO and president of Palisades Resort Dee Byrne told the press. Byrne said that the event is still being looked into and that things are "dynamic." She said, "We still have a lot to learn."

Strong storms have dumped a lot of snow on most of the Sierra Nevada mountains this week, which led to the landslide. It is snowing now, and it's possible that the Tahoe area will get at least another foot of snow from Wednesday afternoon to Thursday morning.
