California Police Caught One of Colorado's Most Wanted Sex Offenders

    2024-01-11

Jaime Soto was caught in California. He was a convicted child sex offender and one of Colorado's most wanted sex offenders. A task team made up of U.S. Marshals Deputies and police from Colorado, Nevada, and California found 43-year-old Soto on Monday, the Marshals Service said Wednesday.

He was wanted for felony arrest on charges related to a conviction he got in 2021 for attempted sexual assault on a kid and second-degree assault, among other things. A second order out of Denver was for not registering as a sex offender, the Marshals Service said. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation said he was number seven on their list of the ten most wanted sex criminals.

On December 28, police in Thornton tried to arrest Soto but found out he had probably left the state and was in Las Vegas. Soto, his girlfriend, and her 6-year-old child were seen leaving Nevada and going into California. This led investigators to a possible location for them. When the car pulled up to a gas station in Baker, California, police say they saw Soto and arrested him.

"This case is a great example of how well our task force works when agencies pool their resources and work together to catch a sexual predator who might be violent," said Kirk Taylor, U.S. Marshal for the District of Colorado. "When multiple local, state, and federal agencies work together toward a common goal, it's amazing what results can be achieved." Right now, Soto is being held in a jail in California while he waits for a hearing to be sent back to Colorado to stand trial.

Soto has been charged with and convicted of many crimes in Colorado since at least 1999, according to court records. These crimes include theft, driving while license is suspended, drug charges, forgery, impersonation, harassment, domestic violence, and more.

The Denver Police Department put up a picture of Soto in 2021 as a "sexually violent predator" "in an effort to increase the community's awareness and out of concern for everyone's safety."
