A mother in Atlanta reportedly shot her daughter dead before turning the gun on herself in a suspected murder-suicide. Police identified the woman as Qiana Rainley as identified by the county Medical Examiner as per FOX5. DeKalb County Police detailed in a statement: “At this time, it appears to be a murder-suicide involving a mother and her 11-year-old daughter. The investigation is ongoing.”
Lake Acworth Closed for Testing Following Sewage Spill

Applications for absentee ballots accepted next week
Voters in Athens-Clarke County can apply for an absentee ballot for this November’s election starting Monday. Though many people have returned to voting in person, absentee ballots are still available. The application process for absentee voting in the November 2024 election begins on Monday, August 19th. The last day to apply for an absentee ballot is eleven days before the election, October 26th.
Coosa High School students’ lawsuit over ‘Black Live Matter’ shirts can move forward in part
ROME, Ga. - A civil rights lawsuit filed by five Black Coosa High School students against the Floyd County School District can proceed to mediation. The lawsuit alleges that the students' First Amendment rights were violated after they were singled out for wearing shirts that read "Black Lives Matter" in protest of a series of racist incidents on campus in 2021, including a Confederate battle flag displayed by students. The students believe they were targeted for their expression, while no actions were taken against the students who were waving what is held by many to be a symbol of racism.

The Rome-Floyd Recycling Center, 412 Lavender Drive in Rome, will host a Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Recycling Event on Saturday, September 21, 2024. Appointments are required and may be made online via the SignUpGenius link at www.floydcountyga.gov starting next week or by telephone at (706) 291-5266 starting on the first business day of next month, says Emma Wells, Director of Solid Waste for Floyd County. She adds that this is the last chance in 2024 to get rid of household hazardous waste, including liquids like used motor oil and paints.
Marietta Certifying Students to Operate Bulldozers, Excavators
MARIETTA — After completing a new course at Marietta High School that trains them to operate heavy equipment like bulldozers, students will be certified to operate such equipment.
