Lillian Frank awarded 2024 Nell Goff Memorial Scholarship
BAR HARBOR — St. Croix District and Bar Harbor Garden Club is pleased to announce the winner of the 2024 Nell Goff Memorial Scholarship: Lillian Frank, a rising senior in earth and oceanographic sciences at Bowdoin College and Ellsworth resident. Frank was selected for this $3,000 scholarship because of her passion and commitment to mitigating climate change and fostering community engagement for a better world.
Kinsley Ray 5K set for July 27
ELLSWORTH — The annual Kinsley Ray Memorial 5K run and walk is scheduled for Saturday, July 27, at the Down East Family YMCA. A children’s fun run starts at 8:45 a.m. followed by the 5K at 9. Register online at Runreg.com/Kinsley-ray-5k ($20 for the 5K, $5 for the fun run) or on race day. The gym will open at 8 a.m. for registration and to welcome runners and walkers.

Maine State Aquarium Set to Open Today With All-New Touch Tank
It's been four years since the Maine State Aquarium closed, and it is back open today!. According to the Boothbay Register, the Maine State Aquarium initially closed in 2020 because of COVID-19. That's when they did an inspection and found that the building (over 30 years old) had severe damage. The Maine Department of Marine Resources, which owns and runs the aquarium, found big problems in the walls, floor, and electrical system thanks to saltwater corrosion. They did not anticipate being closed for so long! But then the aquarium was plagued by the same problems many businesses faced: supply chain and labor shortages. They made the initial exciting announcement back in May.
