Mount Desert Island High School scholarship and award recipients
BAR HARBOR — This year's Mount Desert Island High School graduating seniors were awarded more than $600,000 in local, state and national scholarships. Each scholarship has its own application, nomination and renewal process. Some awards, like the Seawall Manset scholarship, are based on the neighborhood a student grew up in. Others, like the Desiree Elizabeth Gray Music Scholarship, depend on the interests and talents of the student.
MDI Hospital executives address Southwest Harbor clinic concerns
SOUTHWEST HARBOR — Northern Light Health announced the closing of its Southwest Harbor clinic on Herrick Road in late April after approximately 62 years of service. Once the facility closes on Aug. 30, patients under the care of providers at the Southwest Harbor clinic will have the option to transfer to the Northern Light primary care facility in Ellsworth.

(Undated) – Town clerks report very light absentee balloting as state primary day is tomorrow. Balloting runs from 8am to 8pm in most municipalities. In several communities the primary election coincides with local elections. Bar Harbor will elect a pair of town councilors from among six on the ballot. Ellsworth and the RSU 24 towns will decide on whether the adopted school budget should be validated as well as a couple of changes to the Ellsworth city charter. There are races on Republican ballots for both Congressional districts – the winner will appear on the November general election ballot to face Democrat Jared Golden. One Hancock County County Commissioner district will decide which Republican, Bill Clark or Earl Bierman, will appear on the November ballot to face Democrat Rebecca Wentworth who is unopposed.

Main Street will be ready for 4th, Cottage Street work begins

The work includes new water, sewer and stormwater collection lines, all of which will be installed underneath the roadway. Parking, many years later
Many Islander readers may not recognize the name Ted Grindle. Others will remember him fondly as the state police officer who only needed to walk into a bar to put a quick end to a brawl. Ted was a large man, but I suspect that his power to quell disturbance derived more from the respect he commanded than from his physical size. I first met Ted in 1991 when I began to date his daughter Joyce, and because of our mutual love of Bar Harbor, nature and photography we hit it off immediately. A few years later I married his daughter, and Ted became my father-in-law. Sadly Ted passed away in 1999. Some years later while going through my files, I came upon a poem Ted had written and had published in The Bar Harbor Times in May of 1989. Although I didn't even know Ted at the time, I was impressed enough with what he had to say that I clipped the poem and saved it. It occurs to me this evening that the poem Ted wrote those many years ago is, if anything, or more value today than when he penned the original almost exactly 35 years ago:
