New space in IQ brings medical device 3D printing close to clinicians
A new space in Winston-Salem’s Innovation Quarter is bringing 3D printing capabilities closer to clinicians and researchers.<\p> In partnership with electronics manufacturer Ricoh USA, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist has launched a first-of-its-kind 3D printing and medical device manufacturing facility in Innovation Quarter that will be used by clinicians and researchers at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.<\p>
Recyclable food-packaging company plans to hire 80 at new Triad plant
The Pennsylvania-based maker of recyclable-plastic food trays for the meat and produce industries known as Clearly Clean is coming to Greensboro with plans to hire about 80 people and invest nearly $25 million in a manufacturing facility, Gov. Roy Cooper announced Tuesday.<\p> The state was involved through a $200,000 grant from the One North Carolina Fund dependent on the company’s investing $24.9 million. The company, like others receiving grants from the fund, get no money up front and must meet targets regarding job creation and capital investment.<\p>
Glen Raven names new leader for its flagship unit
Venerable Alamance County specialty-textile company Glen Raven has named a new executive to lead its biggest division.<\p> Joseph Davis has been named president of Glen Raven Material Solutions Group, which includes Sunbrella, the company's flagship line of performance fabrics.<\p>
Most top-performing companies take this position on pay transparency
Most top-performing companies are proving to be open and transparent about pay at a time when workers increasingly expect it.<\p> That finding comes from compensation data and software provider Payscale Inc., which recently analyzed companies that beat their own revenue goals to find what they had in common. <\p>
At long last, Greensboro opens new $43M February One Parking Deck
Seven years after city council approved the project, Greensboro on Monday opened the $43million February One Park Deck, which cost almost 50% more than the city originally budgeted.<\p> The five-story deck adds 720 spaces in downtown Greensboro. It also includes electric vehicle charging stations, automated pay systems and walk-up pay stations meant to speed up transactions easier. The deck has entrances on East Market Street and on Davie Street, and it will eventually have have an entrance on February One Place as well. It is across Market Street from the five-story Davie Street Parking Deck.<\p>
Greensboro hotel sells for more than $6 million
A Marriott chain hotel off of Wendover Avenue in Greensboro recently sold for more than $6 million dollars.<\p> Apple Eight N.C. LP sold the SpringHill Suites located at 6006 Landmark Center Blvd. for $6.6 million to Lakshmi MAA Inc., according to register of deeds fillings. <\p>
Home services company moves base to Greensboro, adds call center
Blaze: Heating, Cooling, Electrical and Plumbing has moved its Triad base from High Point to a larger facility near Piedmont Triad International Airport and added a call center there to serve its operations in the Triad, Raleigh and Wilmington.<\p> The new site is 7 Lockheed Court, a 24,000-square-foot building, replacing its previous location at 1137 Foust Ave. in High Point. Both locations are leased. The new site’s owner is listed in Guilford County records as Bengal Properties LLC of the Asheville area.<\p>

Recyclable-trays company seeking incentives for eastern Guilford
The company seeking economic-development incentives from Greensboro and Guilford County in return for 80 new jobs and an investment of nearly $27 million makes recyclable plastic food trays in Pennsylvania.<\p> The description was made in an agenda item for Tuesday's meeting of Greensboro City Council involving a resolution authorizing an incentive package valued at a maximum of $344,171 for a company known so far only as "Project Mercury."<\p>
Owner of acclaimed Winston-Salem restaurant competes on Food Network
Justin Webster, owner and executive chef of Heff’s Burger Club in Winston-Salem, tuned in to his competitive spirit this year on an episode of Food Network’s “Chopped,” which will air on Tuesday.<\p> Named for his best friend and co-parent, Heather Hill, Heff’s Burger Club opened two years ago, after Webster worked at various restaurants and pop-ups in the area. After selling out of burgers in 45 minutes from one pop-up, “Super Smash Burgers,” Webster realized that it was time to pursue his own restaurant. On Aug.5, 2022, Webster and his family opened Heff’s in an approximately 2,500 square-foot space on West Fourth Street. <\p>
Arizona builder plans 400-plus homes in Triad's fastest-growing city
Mebane, already the fastest-growing municipality in the Triad, stands to get a residential project of 409 homes this week.<\p> City Council is scheduled Monday to consider extending city limits to the 54-acre site for the Oakwood subdivision planned by Meritage Homes of the Carolinas, part of national homebuilder Meritage Homes.<\p>
Triad city boosts bid for spec buiding in burgeoning industrial area
The Rock Creek area is likely getting new spec buildings for light industrial or distribution uses as the I-40/85 corridor between Greensboro and Burlington gets increasingly industrialized.<\p> Burlington’s planning board recently recommended annexation and rezoning from agricultural to a medium-density industrial classification for a site consisting of 10 parcels along N.C. 61 next to the northern finger of Lake Mackintosh. The site is in Guilford County but within Burlington’s extra-territorial jurisdiction.<\p>

A recent survey by Action Greensboro revealed, not surprisingly, that the Baby Boomer generation is aging out of Guilford County's workforce to be replaced by the Gen Xers, those born between 1965 and 1980.<\p> While some Baby Boomers will choose to age in place, others might be looking for a step down option from the obligations of home ownership. Despite the seemingly endless number of challenges that come along with being a small-business owner, the vast majority of entrepreneurs recommend it. <\p> A survey of employed adults and small-business owners by Justworks and The Harris Poll earlier this year revealed that 93% of small-business owners would recommend business ownership to others, with 59% saying it was easier than they had anticipated. <\p>
Greensboro gains another Peruvian restaurant from Roanoke
A Greensboro restaurateur is hoping to not only bring good food but good vibes back to Battleground Avenue.<\p> Jonathan Shannon will open Aji Fusion, a Peruvian restaurant, in July at 1720 Battleground Ave. The property, owned by Kotis Property, had been home to Electric Tequila, a bar that had drawn complaints from neighboring businesses and experienced a shooting in 2023, according to WGHP. <\p>
More workers are staying with their current employer in 2024
Most U.S. employees are now choosing to stay with their jobs instead of looking for new ones, a sharp turnaround from the job reshuffling that was common during the Covid-19 pandemic. <\p> A new survey by global advisory firm WTW found 72% of employees are choosing to stay with their employer — up substantially from the 53% who said the same thing in 2022. Back then, about 25% of workers were open to job offers, compared to just 11% now.<\p>
Prospective homebuyers are missing out as sellers cut their prices
The chronically troublesome housing market is seeing more price drops, but that doesn’t necessarily translate into relief for homebuyers.<\p> Data from real estate firm Redfin Corp. shows 6.4% of active listings on the platform had a price drop through the week ending May 26. While that's not a massive portion of listings, the percentage is substantially higher than the 4.4% of listings with price drops recorded during the same time in 2023.<\p>
