Westmoreland County campus clippings: Postseason honors pour in for Pitt-Greensburg tennis

Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference women’s tennis power Pitt-Greensburg threw a net over the all-conference honors.
The regular season and conference tournament runners-up saw freshman Gabi Moder take conference player and newcomer of the year, while three teammates also received accolades.
Freshmen Nancy Jiang and Devon Ulmer were first-team picks in singles and doubles, while freshman Summer Popella (Latrobe) was a first-team selection at No. 2 doubles.
Moder also was an all-AMCC first-team pick at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles.
The Bobcats fell to Penn State Behrend in the AMCC final to finish 7-4.
They had not lost an AMCC postseason match since 2020.
Football
Allegheny: Senior quarterback Trevor Brncic (Franklin Regional) threw for a career-high 306 yards and three touchdowns, but the Gators fell to Waynesburg, 44-41. He completed 31 of 41 pass attempts and also ran for 59 yards and a touchdown.
Grove City : Junior linebacker Jack Jollie (Penn-Trafford) had five tackles, one for a loss, and a QB hurry, and junior Ian Demeri (Penn-Trafford) added a rushing touchdown.
Miami Ohio : Freshman safety Jackson Pons (Norwin) came up with his first college interception in a 46-7 victory over Central Michigan.
Seton Hill : Senior quarterback Jake Cruz passed for 302 yards and a touchdown, and redshirt junior Ky’Ron Craggette ran for 181 yards and three TDs as the Griffins snapped a three-game losing streak with a 31-16 win over visiting Clarion at Offutt Field.
Grad student Todd Phillips racked up 247 yards and a touchdown on just four receptions in the win.
The Griffins scored the last 17 points of the game.
Craggette was named the PSAC West Offensive Player of the Week.
Washington & Jefferson: Grad linebacker Justin Johns (Franklin Regional) had six tackles, 2.5 for loss and two sacks in a 48-7 victory over Bethany. The Presidents improved to 7-1.
Waynesburg: Junior receiver Isaac Trout (Southmoreland) caught a 29-yard touchdown pass as the Yellow Jackets rallied to defeat Allegheny, 44-41, in PAC action.
William & Mary: Senior safety Marcus Barnes (Jeannette) registered nine tackles and had an interception, but the 15th-ranked Tribe (FCS) lost to No. 24 Stony Brook, 35-13.
Men’s soccer
Penn State Behrend: Freshman goalie Anthony Scalise (Norwin) earned the shutout and senior Blake Cooper (Franklin Regional) had an assist as the Lions ran their unbeaten streak to seven with a 4-0 victory over Carlow.
St. Louis: Grad student Nate Ward (Greensburg Central Catholic) has a goal and three assists in nine games this fall.
Seton Hill: Sophomore James Aubrey and junior Tristan Wilson found the back of the net, and sophomore Jonathan Leary have five saves in a clean sheet as the Griffins (9-4-2, 4-2-1) knocked off PSAC West leader Lock Haven, 2-0.
Leary was named the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week.
Wheeling : Freshman Jordan Taylor (Jeannette) scored his third goal of the season as the Cardinals edged Salem, 5-4.
Women’s soccer
Penn State Behrend: Junior goalkeeper Riley Morningstar (Norwin) has made 16 starts and leads the Lions with 30 saves and a 78.9 save percentage.
Pitt-Greensburg: Freshman Dionna Santia was named the AMCC Defensive Player of the Week. She helped to preserve a pair of shutouts while also notching a goal and an assist for the Bobcats.
Robert Morris : Junior forward and captain Paloma Swankler (Norwin) scored a goal and assisted another as the Colonials clipped Wright State, 2-1, to clinch a spot in the Horizon League playoffs.
Swankler scored with 39 seconds left for the game-winner.
She has six goals and four assists for 16 points, which ranks fourth in the Horizon League.
Slippery Rock : Senior Sydney Patrick (Hempfield) scored two goals, including an “Olimpico” score, as the Rock blanked Clarion, 2-0.
After her first goal on a direct free kick, Patrick scored the elusive “Olimpico,” which is when a corner kick goes into the goal without touching another player.
Patrick was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week.
Westminster: Senior Mackenzie Powell (Penn-Trafford) scored her first two goals of the season, senior Natalie Vilchek (Yough) had a goal and an assist, and senior forward Brooke Horvath (Franklin Regional) scored her seventh goal of the season, as the Titans ripped Thiel, 7-0.
Horvath added her third game-winning goal of the season in a 2-0 win over Bethany that improved Westminster’s PAC record to 8-0-1 in the PAC.
Men’s golf
Pitt-Greensburg: The Bobcats continued their hot stretch with their fifth team win of the season, taking the Lebanon Valley Fall Classic in Annville with a score of 17-over-par 305.
They won by two over Scranton.
Sophomore Ashton Beighley (Derry) took third individually with a 3-over 75, while sophomore Anthony Treonze shot 76 to tie for fifth, and junior Zach Abdallah (Franklin Regional), senior Vinny Treonze and junior Nick Thomas (Derry) all shot 77 to tie for 12th.
UPG has six top-five finishes in 10 events.
Women’s volleyball
DePaul: Senior middle blocker Aly Kindelberger (Franklin Regional) has posted double-digit kills in six matches this season, including 11 in a loss to Marquette.
Saint Vincent: Freshman Dakota Hershberger was named the PAC Newcomer of the Week. SHe has 20 kills and a .203 hitting percentage in two matches.
Seton Hill : Sophomore middle hitter Catie Flohr collected 12 kills and senior setter Abby Oesterling had 33 assists and 10 digs as the Griffins (17-3) defeated Point Park, 3-1, in a nonconference match.
Oesterling reached 2,000 career assists.
Waynesburg: Senior Jordan Stein (Norwin) had 25 digs to lead the Yellow Jackets in a 3-2, PAC victory against Westminster.
Women’s cross country
Saint Vincent : Freshman Grace Neubert was named the PAC Newcomer of the Week. She took 17th out of 262 runners at the Rowan Border Battle in 22 minutes and 4 seconds.
Women’s bowling
Saint Vincent: The Bearcats finished second at the Ohio Bowling Conference Tournament, rallying from fourth to second on the second day.
Freshman Kaylie Kurland had a four-game total of 839 and freshman Mara Pilyih rolled an 822 to earn spots on the all-tournament team. They were fourth and fifth overall.
Pilyih was named the AMCC Bowler of the Week.
Men’s swimming
Washington & Jefferson: Sophomore Nathaniel Harden (Hempfield) won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1 minute, 76 seconds, while sophomore Daniel Jeffries (Hempfield) took first place in the 100 freestyle (51.26 seconds), and freshman Micah Lohr (Hempfield) teamed with Jeffries to win the 400 freestyle relay (3:33.36).
Women’s swimming
Saint Vincent: Junior Emma Martz (Hempfield) was named the PAC Swimmer/Diver of the Week. Martz had three individual wins and helped a relay to victory against Mount Union.
