West GA now second largest in Greenpower racing in nation

On Thursday the Troup County Board of Education recognized the Troup High School Greenpower Flying Tigers Racing Team. The team is just one of many Greenpower racing teams in Troup County that have become a national force in green racing.

In 2014, the GreenpowerUSA Foundation was established to give Troup County students in grades 4-12 the opportunity to design, build and race electric-powered vehicles. In 2018, the program expanded to all Troup County middle schools. The following year, programs were added at select elementary schools.

Now after seven years of participation, there are Greenpower teams in nearly every school in the county with local teams competing nationally at every level.

The teams are able to compete thanks to sponsorships from local businesses and the community such as the Callaway Foundation, Kia Georgia and Diverse Power, who have found tremendous value in the Greenpower initiative, as it helps to provide students with skills that help prepare them for the future.

The West Georgia area is currently the second-largest concentration of Greenpower teams in the United States.

Representatives of the Troup High Greenpower team recognized at the board meeting include Assistant Principal Judson Price, Head Coach Devon Lassetter, assistant coaches Brandon Lassetter, Danny Beasley and Nancy Beasley; and team members Rachel Gibson, Preston Strickland, Clint Tanner, Wyatt Ellington, Hayden Pope and Aniyah Smith.
