The annual Empty Bowls fundraiser for the Pike County Salvation Army is set for 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. April 5, at the fellowship hall of Bush Baptist Church in Troy.

Donn Kidd, Pike County Salvation Army service center manager, said this year’s Empty Bowls fundraiser will follow the same format that has been so successful over the years.

The Empty Bowls luncheon will include home-made soups and also signature soups from local restaurants, desserts, beverages and an “empty” hand-made clay bowl to take home. The empty bowls serve as a reminder that 42 million Americans face hunger every day. Also, as many as 828 million people around the globe regularly go to bed hungry.

Kidd said the Empty Bowls Luncheon is a reminder of hunger in the world.

Empty Bowls 2024 will feature the popular picker and singer Ed Whatley during the dinner hour. A demonstrating potter is also a possibility.

Empty Bowls 2024 will feature a silent auction with items made by local craftsmen and also from local businesses.

Items for the silent auction include a free oil change, a signed football from both Troy University and Auburn and also a Nick Saban print.

Donations of auction-quality items are greatly appreciated.

New this year, bids for auction items will be accepted prior to the Empty Bowls luncheon. Written bids may be entered at the Pike County Salvation Army Service Center, 509 South Brundidge Street in Troy, prior to April 5.
