Al Rotton was at the Miles for Smiles 5-K Run/Walk for Colon Cancer Awareness at the Troy Recreation Center Sunday afternoon.

He was not there to run. He was there to thank Melissa Ingram and all the Women in Blue who are dedicated to bringing greater awareness to colon cancer, which is the second leading cause of cancer deaths for men and women.

Rotton is fighting his own battle with colon cancer.

At this time, the cancer is not being detected in the tests.

“But, it will come back,” Rotton said. “I know because the doctors have told me. It will come back.”

Al Rotton’s dual with colon cancer began more than three years ago.

As, owner of the Banks Buy Rite in Banks, it was not unusual for him to get tired at times. But never tired enough to leave the Buy Rite.

“But, on that one morning, I was so tired that I just couldn’t go,” Rotton said.

He went home and almost fell onto the bed. He felt strange, “different and confused.”

    And, “probably” scared.

“I got off the bed but I couldn’t stand up so I fell on the floor,” Rotton said. “When I could get up, I went outside but I could stand up and fell on the ground. Lying there, I had the strangest feeling, like I was outside my body and I was looking down at myself.”

That day, three years ago, was the beginning of Al Rotton’s battle with colon cancer.

And his battle has not been easy. There have bad days and good days and some in-between.

He is no stranger to nurses, doctors’ offices, hospitals and emergency rooms. He is no stranger to fear, uncertainty and bridled hope. He is no stranger to something unwelcomed, called cancer.

Rotton’s cancer has moved through his body and, when he has a good doctor’s report” he rides that welcomed wave of hope.

On Sunday, Al Rotton went to the “Miles for Smiles” 5K Run /Walk in support of and appreciate for the work that is being done to bring greater awareness to colon cancer, to all cancers, so there will be more days for those with cancer to ride the waves of good days.
