Colley Senior Complex a place to create art and cultivate friendships

The Colley Senior Complex was rather quite on Tuesday morning.

But, most times creative juices are flowing, silence is the order of the day,

There was activity in the ceramics room and brushes were busy across the hall.

Over in annex, a couple of seniors were at work with stained glass. One, in one room of the annex, and one in the other. The annex was so quite that passing vehicle sounded like a raceway.

Most often, there is little to no talking when glass is being cut.

However, when the cutting is done, there is time to talk.

Beth Whitson is a student of glass art. She is learning to make stained glass items, “small items,” she said, with a smile.

Whitson admitted that cutting glass is not as easy as she first thought it would be.

Cutting glass requires a sure and steady hand … “and glass breaks.”

Whitson was working on a couple of decorative birds, one red and one blue. Both were very nicely done Jordan said.

Whitson said the joy of making things was coupled with giving them away.

She made the red bird to give to a friend who recently lost a loved one.

“What I’ve heard is that, when you see a redbird outside your window, it’s the spirt of someone special bringing love and comfort to you,” Whitson said.

Cut glass objects are also ways to say “I love you” to who are here and now.

Jordan said the Colley Senior Complex offers many opportunities for learning and for friendship.
