The Pike County Extension Office is hosting a venomous snake identification, general safety around venomous snakes, handling/securing venomous snakes and venomous snake bite protocols from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. June 21, at the Troy University Arboretum, 101 Pell Avenue, Troy.

There is no cost for the workshop for first responders and community members.

Participants will be exposed to live specimens of the six venomous snake species in Alabama.

The topics required include venomous snake identification, common non-native venomous snakes

Abby Peters, Pike County Extension coordinator, said the workshop will also be beneficial for those who work outdoors and/or just enjoy being outdoors.

Peters said snakes can be almost anywhere so it is important to recognize venomous snakes and to know what to do if bitten.

Peters said those who conduct the workshop are trained professionals and the information they share will be most important.

Snakes can be almost anywhere so it’s good to know what to do and how to do when confronted with a situation involving a snake, Peters said.

Attendees will be required to wear close-toed shoes and long pants. Boots are preferred but not required. Please do not bring any pet snakes to this event.

Topics to be covered include: Venomous snake ID, common non-native venomous snakes, general safety around venomous snakes, handling/securing venomous snakes, first responder medicine and bite protocols, and expectations of snakebite care at the hospital.

Online pre-registration is required. And, there will be a limited number of spaces for the workshop.
