Mary Holman Johnson exhibit opens at Johnson Center for the Arts

The Johnson Center for the Arts is a-buzz with the excitement at the opening of Mary Holman Johnson’s exhibit, “Time Travel-My Creative Journey.”

The exhibit will close on October 4. Between the opening and closing of Johnson’s exhibit, there will be several opportunities to meet the artist, to renew old friendships and to make new friends.

Mary Holman Johnson is a Troy native and is well known in Southern circles and the daughter of Holman Johnson, a noted and highly acclaimed photographer. She attended Troy Laboratory School, Troy Junior High, Charles Henderson High School and graduated from Auburn University in 1969 with a Bachelor of Interior Design from the School of Architecture. Her professional career as a commercial interior designer aided in developing her skills for color, texture, proportion and structure which she now uses in her current work at MHJ Studio at Serenbe near Atlanta.

Mary Holman Johnson describes herself as an experimental artist working in several media forms,”Where the muse takes me.”

Currently, Johnson said she is pushing the boundaries of paper and paint to create complex tonal and textural atmospheric images using the gel plate mono printing process.

“What inspires my work is color, texture, ancient archeology, art and architecture, the Cosmos, nature, materials, interior architecture and the process itself,” Johnson said, adding that she could write a book about her journey with each art form but the one skill with all her work is photography.

I have been exposed to photography from the day I was born as my father was Holman Johnson the Photographer of Troy.

Mary Holman Johnson worked in her father’s photography studio during the summers from the time she was 12. She learned many skills while accompanying him during his shoot. She then went to Troy University her first year and that was her first experience using a camera.

“At that time, I also began my journey into fashion photography photographing models on location with my jewelry creations,” she said.

Mary Holman Johnson’s art show at the Johnson Center for the Arts showcases her journey into fashion photography, jewelry and architectural botanicals inspired by nature.

The Johnson Center for the Arts is open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is free.
