Troy University’s Surveying and Geomatics Sciences program is one of seven in the nation to be honored with the Surveying Education Award by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).

The award, which includes a $10,000 prize, recognizes programs that best reflect the organization’s mission to advance licensure for engineers and surveyors in order to safeguard the health, safety and welfare of the public. The award jury considered criteria such as student outcomes, student involvement, outreach and recruitment.

The award will be used to fund scholarships and assist with recruitment efforts, said Dr. Steve Ramroop, program director and associate professor. The program previously received this award in 2016 and 2018.

“We are overjoyed from the continued recognition by the NCEES that our program is one of the best in the country,” he said. “We value our students because our students are the indicators of all the success of our programs. I always tell my students, once you decide on our program, this is a guaranteed career that you will never regret.”

TROY’s Surveying and Geomatics Sciences program boasts a 100-percent placement rate and is the only ABET-accredited surveying and geomatics sciences program in Alabama—and one of the few in the southeastern United States.

“We have students who have established themselves with their own companies not only in Alabama, but out of state as well,” Ramroop said. “There’s a desperate need for this license service in the country, and we are contributing to fulfilling the need for those licenses. We are having companies coming in every semester, fall and spring, recruiting students.”

The NCEES is a nonprofit organization made up of engineering and surveying licensing boards from all U.S. states and territories and the District of Columbia. NCEES helps its member licensing boards carry out their duties to regulate the professions of engineering and surveying and develops best-practice models for state licensure laws and promotes uniformity among the states.
