Conn. man arrested after 6-year-old dies from baseball attack that injured mom, brother

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (TCN) -- A 38-year-old man is facing multiple charges, including murder, for allegedly beating a woman and her two children, one of whom died from injuries sustained in the attack.

WTIC-TV reports on Sept. 25, Bridgeport Police Department officers responded to a residence at an apartment on Main Street after receiving multiple calls regarding a domestic violence incident. The victim reportedly called 911 and said Abdulrahim Sulaiman was assaulting her and her two sons, ages 6 and 4, with a baseball bat. Some neighbors reportedly intervened and saved the woman and her kids as Sulaiman jumped out of a window and into a dumpster before running away. Police apprehended him a short time later.

EMS transported the woman and her two kids to a local hospital, where she and her 4-year-old son were in stable condition, but Bridgeport Assistant State’s Attorney Craig Nowak said the 6-year-old's chance of survival were "close to zero."

Sulaiman was arrested on three counts of attempted murder, three counts of first-degree assault, two counts of risk of injury to a minor, and criminal possession of a firearm.

The Bridgeport Police Department said in a news release Wednesday, Oct. 2, that the 6-year-old boy died from his injuries. Sulaiman's charges have since been upgraded to include first-degree murder with special circumstances.

According to WTNH-TV, two days after the incident, Sulaiman allegedly attacked a judicial marshal in Bridgeport Superior Court, which led to him being additionally charged with assault on a peace officer and disorderly conduct.

Sulaiman's bond is set at $10 million.

Nowak, the assistant state's attorney, said Sulaiman has a "past history of violence not just in this state, but in the state of New Jersey, where he did seven years for aggravated assault." He was reportedly on probation at the time of his arrest for risk of injury, assault on a police officer, and violation of a protective order.
