Just a short distance from Cherokee, the Kituwah Mound, also known as the “Cherokee Mother Town,” holds a significant place in the history of the Cherokee Indians and their ancestors. The mound's purpose and the people who constructed it continue to be subjects of speculation and intrigue. The Kituwah Mound was 15 to 20 feet tall, and the original location of the “eternal flame.” In Cherokee culture, the tribal “keepers of medicine” would keep fires burning in the council houses on top of the mounds, symbolizing the presence of the Creator. It was built around 1000 CE during the period of the South Appalachian Mississippian culture along the Tuckaseegee River. Archaeologists and historians have carefully excavated the site, unearthing a treasure trove of artifacts that offer clues to the lives of the people who inhabited the area centuries ago. The Kituwah Mound's excavation has provided insights into early Cherokee society, trade practices, religious beliefs, and societal structures.

Another place of culture and history to add to your list is the outdoor drama “Unto These Hills.” This drama displays the traumatic and triumphant story of the Cherokee that traces back to the Trail of Tears. It begins with the encounter of the historical Spanish Conquistador, Hernando DeSoto in 1540, Andrew Jackson at the famous Battle of Horseshoe Bend where another famous Cherokee leader, Junaluska saves Jackson’s life, and ultimately the deadly clash between the natives and the forces of the United States Army.
