BREAKING - Just after being found guilty of shooting female hip-hop artist Megan Thee Stallion in the foot after a popular celebrity party in Los Angeles back in 2020, Canadian musician Tory Lanez was given a 10-year prison sentence. The conclusion of this highly followed trial has not only produced a verdict but also shed light on the very difficult process Black women go through when reporting cases of abuse.

Megan Thee Stallion, who was 28 years old when the trial began and ended on Tuesday, experienced what the prosecution has called "repeated and grotesque attacks" during the case. Prosecutors alluded that the case's media attention drew to light the institutional prejudices and obstacles Black women face while trying to get justice for abuse and violence.

Daystar Peterson, better known as Tory Lanez, was convicted of three felonies: assault with a semi-automatic weapon, concealing an unregistered handgun in a motor vehicle, and grossly negligent discharge of a firearm. On July 12, 2020, a shooting took place following a party Kylie Jenner, a reality star and business entrepreneur in the cosmetics industry, had hosted at her home in the Hollywood Hills. Despite Lanez's denial of guilt, the jury's verdict proved that he was responsible for what happened that evening.

The maximum sentence that could’ve been imposed on Lanez for the crimes was 22 years and 8 months in jail. A 13-year sentence was requested by the prosecution, citing Lanez's post-trial behavior, which included social media statements that re-traumatized Megan and led to targeted harassment from his fans.

In contrast, Lanez's legal team argued for a lesser punishment consisting of probation and release from jail so that he could enroll in a residential drug rehab program. The sudden death of Lanez's mother when he was just 11 years old was shown to have contributed to his battles with alcohol addiction disorder, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress.

Lanez's claims were met with suspicion from the prosecution, who pointed out that these concerns were not brought up during the trial. However, the defense argued that Lanez's trauma-related alcohol consumption and aggressive behavior in 2020 were closely related.
