State Sen. Greg Dolezal, R-Cumming, has introduced legislation to create a special committee for investigating Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. This move comes in response to her indictment of former President Donald Trump. The proposed Senate Special Committee on Investigations would have the power to subpoena people and evidence, requiring testimony under oath.

The focus of the investigation centers around accusations against Willis, including an alleged "improper" relationship with Nathan Wade, whom she hired to assist in the investigation into Trump and his co-defendants' efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. These accusations stem from divorce filings by Wade's estranged wife. Credit card statements were presented by the attorney for Wade's estranged wife, showing purchases of airline tickets for Willis and Wade for trips to various locations in 2022 and 2023.

“The multitude of accusations surrounding Ms. Willis, spanning from allegations of prosecutorial misconduct to questions about the use of public funds and accusations of an unprofessional relationship, underscores the urgency for a thorough and impartial examination,” Dolezal said in a statement. “We owe it to the public to ensure transparency, accountability and the preservation of the integrity of our justice system.”

Dolezal's legislation suggests that if the committee finds misconduct, it could recommend changes to state law or budget. He emphasized the need for a "thorough and impartial examination" to ensure transparency and maintain the integrity of the justice system.

The bill represents the latest effort by Senate Republicans to investigate or discipline Willis, amid accusations that she is overly focused on the Trump investigation at the expense of other criminal cases in Fulton County. This move is part of a broader trend by Republican legislators to exercise more control over liberal prosecutors, particularly those who prioritize different policies on law enforcement. The situation is being closely monitored, especially as it relates to Trump's allies seeking to use new laws to target Willis for her actions in the election interference charges case.

The House Judiciary Non-Civil Committee has recently passed legislation aiming to activate the Prosecuting Attorneys Qualifications Commission by removing the requirement for Supreme Court review of the commission's rules, a step initially mandated by law but challenged in court.
