    20th Special Forces group commander promoted to brigadier general

    Brig. Gen. Matthew Valas, commander of NATO headquarters in Sarajevo, was promoted from colonel to brigadier general at Alabama National Guard Joint Force Headquarters on May 31.

    Gov. Kay Ivey administered the oath of office to Valas for his hard work and dedication in the Alabama National Guard. Ivey spoke about how the Alabama National Guard is an important asset to Alabama. Brig. Gen. David Pritchett, the Alabama National Guard Adjutant General, emphasized Valas’s character and work ethic.

    Valas spoke about how everyone that attended his promotion made an impact on his career advancement. He was pinned by his wife Abby Valas. They live in Trussville, Alabama, with their three children, Reese, Gray, and Elin.
